Learning Outcomes Achieved in these small projects/endeavors.

Learning Outcome 1 - A small part of this Learning Outcome was proved in the CV that I created to send to companies for internships. I made designs and iterated through them to create a CV which would fulfill the requirements of being a good CV for an internship.

Learning Outcome 3 - The CV that I created went through multiple iterations as explained in its section below. The iterations have been validated with teachers and are backed by feedback that I got from my Semester Coach Dirk and other teachers and peers such as Stan, Amer, and my teammates, and friends who have done their internships.

Learning Outcome 4 - This learning outcome was achieved using my small endeavor of trying to learn PHP and React, as well as doing research for creating good CVs. For that I researched some CVs online, and I took the time to ask some teachers what I should and shouldn't include, and if I should approach it more professionally, or casually. I also used tools which are recognised in the Professional world such as Figma for the CV, and FreeCodeCamp for learning React, Exercism for learning PHP, and VS code for creating the Animate anything challenge.

Learning Outcome 5 - All of the assignments and small projects undertaken helped me grow as a professional. Especially the fact that I had to search for an internship during all other things I was doing gave me the sneak peak of making sure that I planned things beforehand. I also grew my professional skillset in using tools like Figma, VS code, 3rd party tools and learning platforms like FreeCodeCamp and Exercism. The issues that I had to face during the search for internship were also a great learning experience for me, where I had to force my way through the countless rejection mails that I got.

Animate Anything - GSAP

In a lecture with stan we got introduced to GSAP. He showed us some simple syntax, and let us try to do something by ourselves. I did use GSAP for some of the animations in my portfolio, so it wasn't something new for me, but it was still a great exercise to try and do something cool and simple.

You can have a look at the animation at the right side of the page.

Creating a CV for Internship

In order to apply to some internships, I needed to create a CV where I pointed my skills out. I approached this task a bit hesitantly as I wanted to have a good CV, but wasn't sure what exactly it needed to contain for it to be good.

To gain some insight on that I did some research online, as well as ask some of my colleagues, friends and teachers. The main consensus was that it doesn't need to be perfect. And it needs to be as concise as possible. No one has the time to read through a cv that's too long. It also needs to explain who I am as a person.

As I got to know these things, I created a CV where I put my previous experiences from school's semesters, as well as one time where I had worked as a volunteer. I thught that represented me well as a person, since I love being of help to others. It was also something that I was proud to have done.

Initial CV

I initially started creating the CV in a more conventional style, with no specific design language. It had a side bar with soft and hard skills, languages etc. The main part had previous experiences. This is a very simple and used design of CVs. After that I got some feedback on it, and it was to make it more interesting since I am a Media student, and I agreed with that. One other feedback was to add a picture of myself so people knew who they were 'talking' to, and in the case that I was called for an interview, they knew who to expect.

Iterations

After the feedback I got, I tried finding a style that I liked and one which could show what type of design language I liked. After some experimenting, I found something that I liked, but wasn't sure if that was quite it. That's why I tried using the 2 layouts that I thought were good, and experimented with colors. Some of them turned out quite nice, while others were not that great.

One style where the whole CV was covered with a gradient I really liked though. That's also the one which I ended up using at the end. I love gradients, and I also love grainy textures and I think they go really well together.

One final touch that I added was to include my signature and name in Korean. I do have a special appreciation towards that language, so I like putting my name in in some places sometimes. Dirk also liked that as a personal touch.

Final CV

After I was done with my iterations, I went to get some more feedback on the finished product, and it turned out to be mostly done, with slight changes needed in some layout fixing, adding less or more of certain information, and making sure I don't overdo it.

After I was sure I was done with it, and I needed to be done, I started sending it out to companies for internships.

Learning PHP and React

To have a greater chance at landing an internship I spent some time learning React and PHP. I wanted to have a simple understanding of the 2 things so in case I land an internship with them, I knew what to do. Unfortunately, they didn't help me too much, but nevertheless, I think having some experience with them is still quite useful as they are widely used in the professional field, especially react. That's why I spent most of my time learning that.

The platform I used for React was FreeCodeCamp. It wasn't something I'd used before, but Amer told me that people use it quite a lot, and it had proof that you've done some courses which was useful, so I used that.

When it comes to PHP, I used Exercism as per Dirk's suggestion. Though using that platform was a bit more difficult. I couldn't set up the local server, so I used the online version. And I focused a lot more on react rather than PHP. You can see my progress in React in this page, and PHP on the screenshot on the right, as I can't link my profile in any other public way.

Small Reflection

I realized that having done voluntary work, or any kind of work, as well as having as many varying skills, be it hard or soft, can be extremely valuable as it gives a decent advantage when it comes to finding internships or jobs. The thing that made me realize that was the different skills recruiters look for. Even if I may not be the perfect fit, there are things which they look at and they value in a person. This might be something which motivates me to learn more things in the future and not to limit myself to things at uni or at a specific time that I'm doing. Being able to do more things also gives me the confidence and flexibility to adapt to any situation.

Even now, in the last week of school, where the deadline of submitting the Proposal is in 5 days, I'm not sure if I have an internship. A company is keeping me on wait and they said that I'd receive my assignment soon, so I am waiting for that. I am quite hopeful for that, but I'm not sure if I'll get one. This is one of the hard truths that I came to face this semester and made me not give up on any opportunuties. Almost nothing should be taken for granted, I have to work hard and be persistent. The company that I'm waiting an email from is Consulink. In the interview that I had with them, they said that they'd email my assignment if they choose me as an intern. I am waiting for their email.
